Project: Structural support for Humanitarian aid in Malawi
Beneficiary: Malawi Humanitarian Emergency Response Fund
Amount: 479.000 euro
Duration: 2016 - 2018
The Government has awarded a grant of 479,000 euros to the Malawi Humanitarian Emergency Response Fund for the period 2016-2018. This fund, administered by the UN, ensures that funds are available at the onset of a humanitarian crisis. Flanders is a co-founder of the fund and was the first donor in 2012. The Flemish support persuaded others to donate to the fund.
Malawi is a high risk country of droughts, floods and cholera outbreaks. This has led to several periodic famines in the past. The risk of humanitarian crises is also increased because of climate change. Good coordination and sufficient resources to act quickly are therefore important in this country.
