On 10 April, the Basque president Iñigo Urkullu received Minister-president Bourgeois at the Palacio de Ajuria Enea in Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Basque Country. The future of the EU and the role of the European regions and the federated states within the EU was an important topic for discussion.
Both the Basque and the Flemish government developed their own vision on the future of the European Union. These visions are similar on several points. Both federated states believe in the European project and want a deepening of European cooperation in a number of domains.
Minister-president Bourgeois and the Lehendakari agreed to explore new possibilities for cooperation between regions to increase participation on the European decision-making level. Minister-president Bourgeois also made an appeal to the strong, legislative regions in Europe to claim their role on the European stage, just as Flanders did.
