From 1924 to 1962, Rwanda and the neighbouring country of Burundi were mandate territories, before later being a trust territory of Belgium. The Government of Flanders has little institutional cooperation with Rwanda as they opted to geographically concentrate their development cooperation in Southern Africa. Nevertheless, Flemish universities are active in Rwanda through funding from with the federal development cooperation.
