Project: Reducing food and income insecurity among vulnerable households in Malawi through climate services and integrated risk management Beneficiary: World Food Programme Amount: 2.500.000 euro Duration: 2017-2019 Flanders supports the World Food Programme (WFP) in protecting farmers in Malawi against the increasing climate challenges. Recent months WFP has paid food and / or cash transfers to 5.8 million Malawians who can not meet their food needs as a result of the drought by the weather phenomenon El Niño. Now, El Niño is over, La Niña will be introduced.

grant to the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) for developing a dynamic monitoring system for land and soil erosion
Duration: 2017-2018 Budget: 500.000 euro Flanders supports ICRAF to inform policymakers and farmers in Malawi about the health of the soil. To protect farmers against climate change, it is important that their activities (fertilization, applying agroforestry, choice of crops, ...) align as closely as possible to the local soil health, which modifies increasingly due to climate change. ICRAF is developing, in collaboration with the Malawi government, an online searchable map that documents the characteristics of the upper soil layer (50 cm) in Malawi.

Project: Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp) in Malawi Beneficiary: Multi Donor Trust Fund Duration: 2017-2018 Amount: 5.000.000 euro Together with several donors, the agricultural sector in Malawi will be supported through the Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp). The Support Project (ASWAp-SP) provides technical and financial support to the Ministry of Agriculture for the implementation of this ASWAp. Funding is provided through the Multi-Donor Trust Fund and is supervised by the World Bank.

Grant for training centres midwifery Mozambique
Beneficiary: United Nations Population Fund Budget: 1.340.000 euro To reduce the infant and maternal mortality Mozambique has already delivered great efforts. In the period 2008 - 2014 the priority was to increase the number of health personnel. Since 2015, the focus shifted towards increasing the quality of of the health personnel. With the project "Enhancing the quality of the midwifery workforce in Mozambique" United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) wants to increase the number of qualified midwives by applying the Cuban training model for medical personnel in Mozambique.

Financial contributions to the African Climate Change Fund
Duration: 2017-2018 Budget: 2.000.000 euro According to a study by Climate Policy Initiative in 2013-2014, only 3% of the global climate financing goes to Sub-Sahara Africa. This contrasts with the fact that Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the lowest contribution to climate change and at the same time has the highest vulnerability to climate change impact. It is known that these countries find it more difficult to raise climate finance.

Grant for accelerating women and girls rights in Mozambique
Beneficiary: ActionAid Mozambique Budget: 400.000 euro The "Accelerating women and girls rights" project of the NGO ActionAid Mozambique wants to increase the resilience of young girls and women. This by informing them of their rights and by teaching them skills to cope in dificult circumstances. For this project in the districts of Marracuene and Mahiça ActionAid Mozambique works with 24 girls' clubs who in turn work with school councils, parents, religious leaders and multi-sectoral groups.

Beneficiary: International Partnership for Microbicides Budget: 400.000 euro International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) is an international NGO that works for safe and effective HIV prevention. IPM focuses on the development of new medical instruments and making them available at an affordable price in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Project: Building an ecosystem for Social and Environmental Entrepreneurship in South Africa Partner: SEED, hosted by Adelphi Research Duration: 1.01.2016 – 31.12.2018 Budget: 1.000.000 euro This project further supports the development of the SEED programme in South Africa. It is aimed at the development of social and environment-friendly entrepreneurship to stimulate the creation of sustainable development for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups and subsequently contribute to a green and sustainable economy. Duration: 2014-2015 Budget: 1.057.897€ The World Health Organisation (WHO) wants to improve access to reproductive health systems for women in southern African countries. The present project ties in with the WHO Country Cooperation Strategy (CCS 2014-2019) for Mozambique and is the successor of a previous project that was financed by Flanders within the framework of WHO CCS 2009-2011.

Grant to APOPO for the project ‘Accelerated TB case detection in Mozambique’ (2014)
Duration: 2014-2017 Budget: 991.100€ On the 2011 budget an amount of EUR 590,695 was already reserved for the trial phase of this pilot project. Therefore, this is the second phase. In comparison with other countries in sub-Saharan Africa and the rest of the world, Mozambique is faced with a high number of TB infections. Just like in other African countries, co-infection with HIV is an important factor.

Grant to Pathfinder International for ‘Strengthening the Capacity of Youth Civil Society in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights’ (2015)
Duration: 2015-2016 Budget: 250.000€ According to data from the Mozambique National Health Institute (INS) the HIV prevalence in Mozambican girls is three times as high as in boys. Due to gender inequality and a limited possibility to protect the position of women at policy level, women's rights are frequently violated.

Project: the development of better health care on the basis of evidence-based medicine (EBM) Beneficiary: Instituto Nacional de Saúde Mozambique (INS), the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITG) Duration: 2014-2017 Budget: 1.201.91 euro This budget is for Phase II. For Phase I, which ran from 2013 to February 2015, a budget of EUR 926,805 had already been appropriated, of which EUR 689,755 was intended for INS and EUR 237,050 for ITG. Through this aid the Government of Flanders wants to further the development of better health care on the basis of evidence-based medicine (EBM).

Grant to the Mikolongwe Veterinary College of Science, 2015
Duration: 2015-2016 Budget: 150.000€ In 2008 the Government of Flanders allocated a grant to Mikolongwe College within the framework of the Support to Agricultural Extension Training and Services Programme. This grant totalled EUR 989,200. The programme was completed in 2013. According to an impact study carried out in late 2013 Flanders’ support helped improve infrastructure and enhanced the technical competencies of the teaching staff. In addition the number of annual student enrolments has increased because of the improved infrastructure.

Grant to the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) for the Agroforestry Food Security Programme Phase II - Extended
Duration: 2016-2018 Budget: 1.000.000 The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is a research centre with headquarters in Kenya. ICRAF promotes the worldwide application and dissemination of forestry in sustainable agricultural practices in view of better food production among smallholder farmers. Since 2009 Flanders has supported ICRAF’s Agroforestry Food Security Programme in Malawi which aims to sustainably increase the maize yield for farmers in the focus districts Mzimba and Kasungo through the application of agroforestry technologies.
