In the period 2008 - 2014 the priority was to increase the number of health personnel. Since 2015, the focus shifted towards increasing the quality of of the health personnel. With the project "Enhancing the quality of the midwifery workforce in Mozambique" United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) wants to increase the number of qualified midwives by applying the Cuban training model for medical personnel in Mozambique.

Nutrition and food security (MDG 1) take centre stage in Flemish development cooperation and feature in the cooperation with the partner countries Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa. Hunger and poverty continue to pose serious problems in several African countries.
