Grant to International Red Cross Flanders for reducing the impact of climate change in Southern Africa through Disaster Risk Reduction, 2018
Beneficiary: Red Cross-Flanders Amount: 2.500.000 euro Period: 2018 - 2020 Mozambique and Malawi are one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change due to extreme droughts, flooding and storms,... Climate change has a strong impact on the quality of peoples’ lives and the socio-economic conditions of the population are under pressure. International Red Cross-Flanders will focus on strengthening local Red Cross and Red Crescent sections in Malawi and Mozambique. Red Cross wil cooperate directly with local institutions.

Project: support to entrepreneurs in the South by making experts available Beneficiary: Ex-Change Duration: 2011-2016 Budget: 3.000.000 Ex-Change gives support to entrepreneurs in the South by making experts available to them. During short expertise assignments they provide assistance to SMEs in the South. Within the framework of the cooperation with the partner countries Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa, the reinforcement of local enterprises, and especially SMEs, is focused on as well. Many small enterprises in the South invest in their own region and create jobs.

Grant for a baseline study on first aid activities in Southern Africa, 2013
Partner: Belgian Red Cross - Flanders Duration: 2013-2014 Budget: 147.840 euro The Belgian Red Cross - Flanders intends to strengthen the first aid activities of 10 national committees in southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe) via the International Red Cross. In order to bring this to a successful end, however, the idea is to carry out a baseline study first. For this purpose, the needs, legislative frameworks, policy plans and ongoing activities of each of the different countries will be recorded.

Nutrition and food security (MDG 1) take centre stage in Flemish development cooperation and feature in the cooperation with the partner countries Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa. Hunger and poverty continue to pose serious problems in several African countries.

Agroforestry - CATS Banks Project (ICRAF) 2010
Duration: 2010-2013 Budget: 319.709,77 euro Through this agroforestry project the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) will develop a sustainable, cost-efficient way to contribute to greater food security and poverty reduction for millions of farming families in Sub-Saharan Africa. Duration and budget In 2010, a grant of 319,709.77 euros was allocated to the project "Community Agroforestry Tree Seeds Banks (CATS Banks): Building Agroforestry Scaling up Platform for Diversifying Livelihoods Opportunity in Malawi and Mozambique".

Since 2008, the Government of Flanders has already granted specific support to the country programmes of WFP in Malawi and Mozambique. The current aid covers the period from 2012 to 2014. Duration and budget The contribution for the period 2012 to 2014 amounts to three million euros. Problem definition Between 2007 and 2009, the number of undernourished people rose sharply, reaching the sad peak of more than one billion people in 2009.

Project: emergency aid after floods in Malawi and Mozambique Beneficiary: Malawi Humanitarian Emergency Response Fund (HERF) and One Programme UN Amount: 329.000 euro Duration: February 2015 In recent weeks heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in Mozambique and Malawi. In Mozambique the provinces of Zambézia and Nampula are affected the worst. It is feared that at least 200,000 people will soon feel the effects of the food shortage. In Malawi especially the southern districts of Nsanje, Chikwawa, Phalombe and Zomba are affected.

Project: Grant to the African Climate Change Fund Beneficiary: African climate Change fund period: 2017-2018 Amount: 2.000.000 euro According a study by Climate Policy Initiative in 2013-2014, only 3% of global climate funding went to Sub Saharan Africa. This contrasts with the finding that Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the lowest contribution to climate change, but with the highest vulnerability to climate change impacts. It is known that these countries find it more difficult to raise climate finance.
