Grant for 'building markets for prosperity' of ACE, Malawi, 2020
Project: Building Markets for Prosperity (BM4P) Beneficiary: Agricultural Commodity Exchange for Africa (ACE) Duration: 2020 - 2024 Amount: 1.500.000 euros ACE operates as a trade facilitator bringing together sellers, warehouse managers, banks and buyers to create structure and order in the agricultural market, which is predominantly in the informal economy. A context in which small-scale farmers are easily exploited. The project builds on the previous project "Strengthening Farmer Organisations and Rural Structured Trade Mechanisms in Malawi" carried out by ACE and WFP (2014).

Project: Reducing food and income insecurity among vulnerable households in Malawi through climate services and integrated risk management Beneficiary: World Food Programme Amount: 2.500.000 euro Duration: 2017-2019 Flanders supports the World Food Programme (WFP) in protecting farmers in Malawi against the increasing climate challenges. Recent months WFP has paid food and / or cash transfers to 5.8 million Malawians who can not meet their food needs as a result of the drought by the weather phenomenon El Niño. Now, El Niño is over, La Niña will be introduced.

Project: Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp) in Malawi Beneficiary: Multi Donor Trust Fund Duration: 2017-2018 Amount: 5.000.000 euro Together with several donors, the agricultural sector in Malawi will be supported through the Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp). The Support Project (ASWAp-SP) provides technical and financial support to the Ministry of Agriculture for the implementation of this ASWAp. Funding is provided through the Multi-Donor Trust Fund and is supervised by the World Bank.

Climate change has a strong impact on the quality of peoples’ lives and the socio-economic conditions of the population are under pressure. Beneficiary: World Health Organization (WHO) Budget: 2.000.000 euros Duration: 2018 - 2021 The disease burden in Mozambique is characterized by a large proportion of climate-sensitive diseases. Malaria (6.2 million cases in 2016) and HIV / AIDS (13.2% prevalence in 2015) make up more than half of the mortality in Mozambique. Recurrent epidemics of climate-sensitive diseases (such as cholera, measles, dengue fever, chikungunya, West Nile and yellow fever) put pressure on the already over-health system.

IFPRI will use these funds in the coming three years to assist the Malawi Ministry of Agriculture in the development of a coordinated agricultural extension policy.

Many small enterprises in the South invest in their own region and create jobs.
