On 23 August, Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) and the Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). With this Memorandum, VLIZ and IMARPE expressed their wish to develop closer scientific cooperation and knowledge exchange.
The Marine Institute of Peru - IMARPE is a specialized technical agency of the Ministry of Production, aimed at scientific research, study and knowledge of the Peruvian sea and its resources, to advise the government in the decision-making regarding the rational use of fishery resources and conservation of the marine environment, actively contributing to the country's development. Since 2008, IMARPE and VLIZ have already collaborated in the context of the Flanders UNESCO Science Trust Funds (FUST) in projects such as SPINCAM and Ocean Teacher Global Academy. With the current MoU, the institutions want to strive for more concrete institutional cooperation in, for example, the exchange of expertise and data, as well as for mutual access to each other's research infrastructures such as research vessels and instruments.
Earlier this year, the Peruvian Institute for Agricultural Research (INIA) also entered into a cooperation agreement with its Flemish counterpart Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Research (ILVO). The new MoU between IMARPE and VLIZ also covers marine ecological and fishery research between the two partners.
