From 19 to 22 November, a Georgian delegation visits Flanders to study children's rights. The delegation, composed of elected representatives, civil servants and experts from civil society, is interested in how Flanders puts children's rights into practice. The visit coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The convention recognizes that children are full citizens of our society and that they have rights, such as the right not to be discriminated, the right to express their opinion and the right to be protected against violence. The Convention on the Rights of the Child is an important guideline in Flemish policy.
The Foreign Affairs department put together a richly filled program with meetings with various entities of the Flemish government, the Flemish parliament, the Children's Rights Commission and the Flemish Peace Institute.
The Georgian delegation wants to gain insights in view of developing a "Children's Rights Code". With these code, Georgia wants to approach the issue of children's rights in a holistic way. The code or law would tackle all challenges concerning children's rights in various fields such as education, justice, care, ... together.
