On behalf of the Government of Flanders, Minister-president Jan Jambon congratulates Mr. Mathias Cormann on his appointment as Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The Australian, who was born in Eupen and studied at the Catholic University of Leuven, among others, will take over from current Secretary-General Angel Gurría from 1 June 2021. Within the OECD, he wants to focus on promoting stronger, cleaner and fairer economic growth, as well as increasing employment and living standards.
Over the past 60 years, the OECD has been a catalyst for change in many aspects of public policy. Moreover, “Better Policies for Better Lives”, the OECD adage, remains much needed to shape the global recovery. Flanders therefore wishes to remain involved in the activities of the OECD in various ways, for example by participating in (ministerial) meetings, committees or semi-autonomous bodies and financial support (studies, programs). The openness that the OECD shows to regional data is of great importance for Flanders to underpin policy.
The Government of Flanders is looking forward to working with Mathias Cormann to strengthen cooperation between Flanders and the OECD.
