On 7 October, Minister-president Geert Bourgeois granted 250.000 euros for emergency aid to help those effected by the recent earthquake and tsunami that struck the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Sulawesi was hit by a severe earthquake on 28 September, followed by a tsunami. 1.5 million people are affected by the disaster. “According to an official United Nations report, almost 200,000 people in Sulawesi are in urgent need of humanitarian aid. With this contribution we are responding to this international call to help the victims of the tragedy," says Bourgeois.
The grant goes to the Consortium 12-12 that brings together 7 NGOs active in the field of humanitarian aid: Caritas International, Rode-Kruis Vlaanderen, Handicap International, Dokters van de Wereld, Oxfam Solidarity, Plan International Belgium and Unicef Belgium. They will provide medical, sanitary and psychosocial assistance, water and protection of vulnerable groups such as children.
