On 22 June Secretary General Verlaeckt and Ambassador Cantú Segovia signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Mexico and Flanders in Brussels.
Although Mexico and Flanders have had a close relationship for a long time already, this is the first formal agreement between borh. Against the background of ongoing talks for the modernization of the free trade agreement EU - Mexico, both parties found deemed the time right to consolidate and strengthen their relationship.
The MOU defines the areas of cooperation: development of human capital, higher and academic education, scientific research, innovation and technological development, culture and business promotion.
Prior to the signing Minister-president Bourgeois had a meeting with the Mexican ambassador. The Minister-president stressed the importance of Mexico as a trading partner for Flanders and offered the Flemish expertise in the fields of port construction, dredging and water management for the further development of the Mexican economy.
