The ties between Mexico and Flanders are close for several decades. Historical ties go back to Charles V, There is intensive economic cooperation and cultural exchanges, close political ties and a rising tourism. The Memorandum of Understanding concluded in 2016, is only a logical consequence.
The Memorandum describes the areas for cooperation: the development of human capital, higher and academic education, scientific research, innovation and technological development, culture and business.
Mexico and Flanders will soon also have a co-production agreement and the modernization talks on the free trade agreement between Mexico and the European Union are in a final phase.
