Grant to International Red Cross Flanders for reducing the impact of climate change in Southern Africa through Disaster Risk Reduction, 2018

Beneficiary: Red Cross-Flanders

Amount: 2.500.000 euro

Period: 2018 - 2020

Mozambique and Malawi are one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change due to extreme droughts, flooding and storms,... Climate change has a strong impact on the quality of peoples’ lives and the socio-economic conditions of the population are under pressure.

International Red Cross-Flanders will focus on strengthening local Red Cross and Red Crescent sections in Malawi and Mozambique. Red Cross wil cooperate directly with local institutions. This project can therefore have a long-lasting impact.

The activities of International Red Cross Flanders focus on preventing humanitarian emergencies due to climate change. 'Cash transfers' aims to bring life-saving funds to the affected population immediately after the outbreak of a climate disaster.

With an annual sum of 14,5 million, this project confirms Flanders' commitment for international climate finance in the period from 2016 to 2020.
