Duration: 2011-2013
Budget: 974.604,45
Since 1997, the NGO “Pathfinder International” has been implementing programmes on family planning, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS in Mozambique. The most important target audiences are adolescents and youngsters. With this project, Pathfinder International wants to enable young people to stand up for their rights and needs in the field of sexual and reproductive health.
Duration and budget
The Government of Flanders earmarks 974,604.45 euros for the implementation of this three-year project that has been running since 2011.
Problem definition
According to data from the National Health Institute of Mozambique, the HIV prevalence in Mozambican girls (8% among 15- to 19-year-olds, 30% among 20- to 24-year-olds) is three times as high as in boys (3% and 7%).
Due to gender inequality and a limited possibility to protect the position of women at policy level, women's rights are frequently violated. Young girls marry at a very early age, they often have unwanted pregnancies and they fall victim to violence more easily.
Practical implementation
With this project, Pathfinder International seeks to reinforce the organisational and technical capacities of youth organisations. In addition, the organisation wants to train young people, so as to allow them to effectively stand up for their rights and needs in the field of sexual and reproductive health. In their turn, these young people will then be able to raise awareness within the local communities.
Pathfinder International wants to reinforce five youth organisations in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Tete, so as to allow them to participate in the implementation of policy-making regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights by 2014, and this in a sustainable way.
The project aims to realise the following results:
- a better organisation and management of five youth organisations
- improved skills of the organisations with regard to the influence on policy and technical expertise in sexual and reproductive health
- youth organisations organise activities around influence on political policy and the generation of an increased demand for sexual and reproductive health services and rights
