Flanders supports the implementation of the Malawi health policy, but also wants to strengthen the activities of NGOs in the health sector. Malawi’s short and long term challenges have reached such great volume that this double approach is necessary.
Since 2003, the Malawi Red Cross Society has been active in Kasungu, where local hospital outreach centres were built with the support of the Dutch Red Cross. The objective of the project is to improve the general health condition of 7,000 families in Kasungu by the end of 2013.
The activities can be reduced to the following result areas:
- improving sustainable drinking water, sanitation and hygiene.
- reducing vulnerability to HIV/AIDS
- decreasing the malaria mortality rate
- decreasing maternal and child mortality rates
- building the capacity of first aid providers and Red Cross personnel
- building the general capacity of the Malawi Red Cross Society
