In 2011, the Government of Flanders decided to extend the aid to the World Food Programme (WFP) structurally. Since 2008, the Government of Flanders has already granted specific support to the country programmes of WFP in Malawi and Mozambique. The current aid covers the period from 2012 to 2014.
Duration and budget
The contribution for the period 2012 to 2014 amounts to three million euros.
Between 2007 and 2009, the number of undernourished people rose sharply, reaching the sad peak of more than one billion people in 2009. During the first half of 2010 the markets for agricultural products seemed to have moved into calmer waters. However, since the second half of 2010 there was growing concern again about the high food prices.
The Flemish aid comprises 3 components:
- A general contribution (budget aid) of 20% to the multilateral fund of the WFP.
- A 40% contribution to specific programmes in Malawi.
- A 40% contribution to specific programmes in Mozambique.
