Challenges for agriculture in the Low Countries

  • July 5, 2018

On 5 July, Minister of Agriculture Joke Schauvliege and a delegation from the Flemish agricultural sector paid a working visit to the Netherlands. In addition to discussions with her Dutch counterparts, the minister also visited Wageningen Plant Research and several pilot companies.

The minister met her Dutch counterpart, Carola Schouten in Den Bosch. They discussed the proposals of the European Commission for the new Common Agricultural Policy after 2020. But also the manure policy and the fisheries were discussed. Both ministers decided to put agriculture on the agenda of the Flemish-Dutch Summit that will take place in November 2018.

At the Vredepeel research center, part of Wageningen University, the Flemish delegation was given a presentation and guided tour of the research into arable farming, green space and open-ground vegetables. The day ended with a visit to a pig farm for intensive livestock farming.
