Award Essay on World War I

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Scriptie vzw launch the Award Essay the Great War. During 5 years the award will map and reward all bachelor's and master's essays on World War I.

The Great War was the first international conflict on a global scale. Millions of soldiers and civilians lost their lives. A century later, the events of '14 -'18 still have a fundamental impact on our society. It is important to keep the memory of the Great War alive and to raise awareness among younger generations.

"With this award we want to map and stimulate qualitative papers on World War I," said Pierre Ruyffelaere, coordinator of the Project  Great War Centenary (2014-18). "The award is open to all written bachelor and master's theses in which the First World War is central. We not only aim for historians or archaeologists. Also essays on remembrance education or war poetry are welcome. "

1,000 euros for the winner

The award will be presented twice. In December 2015 the three best WWI theses from the academic years 2013-14 and 2014-15 will be selected. At the end of 2018 the best theses from the academic years 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 follow. The author of the winning essay each receive 1,000 euros, second prize 500 euros and third 250 euro. Participants are also eligible for the annual Flemish Thesis award (Vlaamse Scriptieprijs).
