Uruguay is a small country of only 3.5 million people, wedged between larger neighbouring countries of Brazil and Argentina. It is culturally similar to Argentina, except for the African American Carnival and its accompanying music, the candombe. The country is doing well in economic terms and the port in Montevideo, the capital city, is one of the most important on the continent. Since half of the port operations are controlled by Katoen Natie, Flemish involvement is high. Uruguay is also a country that follows a progressive social policy. It advocates all forms of innovation in the environment, science and digitalisation. In that sense, the country offers a lot of potential for further cooperation with Flanders.
