Peru is the largest and economically most important of the Andes countries. It is also the birthplace of the Inca people. Machu Picchu, near Cuzco, is regarded as one of the wonders of the world. However, Peru is also home to other civilizations, including among others, the Mocha and the Nazca cultures. Mining is Peru's most important economic sector. However, mining is also a controversial subject when it comes to respecting the rights of the indigenous cultures and environmental legislation.
Since the turn of the century, Peru has followed a path to stability, especially on the economic front. Peruvian economic growth rates of the past decade are among the best on the continent. That is why FIT (Flanders Investment and Trade) is opening an office in Lima in 2017. Flanders also fosters academic links with Peru through the Flemish universities that are part of the VLIR framework. Culturally speaking, Peru has a number of prominent writers. Mario Vargas Llosa won the Nobel Prize in literature and Alfredo Bryce Echenique is known worldwide.
