The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is a research centre with headquarters in Kenya. ICRAF promotes the worldwide application and dissemination of forestry in sustainable agricultural practices in view of better food production among smallholder farmers.
Since 2009 Flanders has supported ICRAF’s Agroforestry Food Security Programme in Malawi which aims to sustainably increase the maize yield for farmers in the focus districts Mzimba and Kasungo through the application of agroforestry technologies. Meanwhile, owing to the support from Flanders to ICRAF, among other things, Malawi has developed into an exemplary country in Southern Africa in the field of agroforestry.
With this grant the Government of Flanders seeks to continue these achievements by improving the food security, nutrition and income of smallholder farmers and increasing the resilience of the rural environment to climate change through the upscaling of innovative agroforestry technologies. This support will mobilise and reinforce 30,376 farmers and increase their awareness. Specific attention is devoted to the most vulnerable in society, including female heads of household and HIV infected households.
