On 28 April, the Government of Flanders decided to donate 1 million euros to Consortium 12-12. The Consortium 12-12 raises funds to combat the famine in Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and Nigeria. According the United Nations, the famine is the worst humanitarian crisis since 1945.
20 million people in South Sudan, Nigeria, Yemen and Somalia suffer from severe malnutrition. Half a million children are threatened with death. Armed conflicts, climate factors and extreme poverty are at the root of this humanitarian disaster. In March, the United Nations called on the international community to gather funds urgently.
Consortium 12-12 launched a call to the Belgian people in March. 12-12 is a collaboration of Caritas International, Handicap International, Doctors of the World, Oxfam Solidarity, Plan Belgium and UNICEF Belgium. In case of severe crises, the 6 organizations work together to collect funds. Each organization is active in the affected region.
