On 21 November, Minister of Culture, Sven Gatz, officially launched the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 in Flanders. The focus in Flanders will be on strengthening the administrative ties between movable, immovable and immaterial heritage. The Department of Culture and the Immovable Heritage Agency are working together on this initiative.
The European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH2018) is an initiative of the European Union. The aim is to promote cultural diversity in Europe, to make Europeans aware of their shared history and to enrich and strengthen European identity. At the launch event in Brussels, Minister Gatz called on the sector to seize this opportunity: "Seize the European Year of Cultural Heritage to work together with other organizations and institutions across Europe, to exchange knowledge and expertise and to build a European network."
Together with Minister of Immovable Heritage, Geert Bourgeois, Minister Gatz encourages the sector and the government to use 2018 to think about and develop future heritage policies for Flanders and Europe.
