Flanders is intertwined with its international environment. Some important challenges can only be tackled in an international context and by good cooperation with foreign partners. Therefore it is a core task of the foreign policy of Flanders to defend the Flemish interests abroad. To that end, political relations in the EU, with governments abroad and in many international organizations are maintained.
The foreign policy of Flanders is given shape within a policy framework which, among other, consists of the constitutional order of the Federal Belgium, Flemish decrees and other regulations, the Flemish coalition agreement, the policy paper and potentially other policies adopted by the Government of Flanders (strategy papers).
