Flanders UNESCO Trustfunds

To streamline the cooperation with UNESCO, Flanders has created two trust funds: the Flanders UNESCO Science Trust Fund (FUST) and the General Trust Fund (FUT).

The Flemish expertise in water management is a valuable asset in the fight against climate change (FUST). Through FUT, with a focus on heritage and Africa, we contribute to the cultural preservation and the development of socio-economic benefits for Africa, to marine biodiversity and to the conservation of the oceans and world cities. It is leverage for sustainable development and peace.

By supporting projects and activities in Africa, Flanders recognizes and supports the priority position that UNESCO has given to this region. This is in line with flanders policy concerning its partners Mozambique, Malawi and South Africa.

In addition, Flanders is committed to the preservation of heritage in all its aspects and in the three recognized types. In addition to World Heritage, UNESCO focuses on the protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage (rituals, dance, music, ...) and Underwater Cultural Heritage.

The Flanders UNESCO Trust Fund receives every two years a donation of about 900,000 euro from the Government of Flanders.

Between 2000 and 2016 the contributions for both Trustfunds add up to 33 million euros. Thus, Flanders is a very credible and constant voluntary UNESCO donor.
