Canada played an important role in the liberation of our country during World War I and World War II. A major focus of Flemish relations with the country rests on the commemoration of fallen Canadian soldiers. Canadian tourism to Flanders, and more specifically to the Westhoek (Ypres), is therefore also important.
Relations between Flanders and Canada also focus on maritime transport and academic cooperation. Flemish ports are working with ports in Canada, and Flemish universities exchange students and researchers.
Canada is a member of the main international organisations such as the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the G-7 and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. It is of interest to the Flemish Government to follow political developments in Canada. In addition, from an economic point of view, Canada is an important trading partner. The European free trade and investment treaty with Canada should further strengthen this.
